Current Role

Byron Smith, Sr. is the owner/broker of Metropolitan Realty Group, Inc., a real estate investment firm located in Vienna, Virginia which focuses on the office and multi-family asset classes.

Professional Background

For more than 32 years, Byron has been active in the Washington, D.C. and Northern Virginia real estate markets as a real estate attorney, broker and investor. He has served as an attorney for the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development as well as an attorney for a large Washington D.C. law firm. While In private practice he represented clients on real estate and tax matters. Over the past 32 years he has invested in and developed real property in the multi-family, office and retail asset classes.

CCIM and Professional Affiliation Experience

Byron has served the CCIM Institute in many leadership positions. In 2005 he was chairman of the Faculty Committee and in 2007 he chaired the Body of Knowledge committee. In 2006, he was the Institute's Presidential Liaison for Education. For the past 5 years he has been a member of the Institute's Board of Directors. He has served the Virginia CCIM Chapter in all of its leadership positions and was the 2002 Virginia CCIM Chapter president.

Instructional Background

Byron has been a member of the CCIM Faculty for 14 years. He is a senior instructor in CI Intro, CI 101 and CI 102. Until 2007 he served as a member of the Course Concepts and Review team. Byron has taught the CCIM curriculum throughout the United States and in China, Russia, Japan, Taiwan, Poland, the United Kingdom and Mexico. He has received numerous awards from the Institute including:
Senior Instructor of the Year for CI 102 - 2001
Award for Special Contribution to the CCIM Education Program - 2003
Senior Instructor of the Year for CI 101 - 2004
Robert L. Ward Instructor of the Year - 2006

Teaching Philosophy

Byron's teaching philosophy is to make complex subjects readily understandable.

Education

Byron received his undergraduate degree from The George Washington University where he majored in political science and economics. He received his Juris Doctorate degree from The Rutgers University School of Law. He also attended the Rutgers University Graduate School of Business Administration where he concentrated on the areas of real estate and finance.
